Another of what's becoming a regular Sunday catch-up-on-all-the-weeks-shenanigans-that-I-would've-blogged-about-if-I-wasn't-the-hapless-oaf-that-I-am sort of posts. Avast!
- Three new pieces up for sale at the Emporium, all nicely sized, ideal for framing and priced far too low really considering it's original artwork. Still, a few quid's better than none at all, so do go forth and shop - nothing says 'happy christmas' like tasteful nudity. Add a note saying you came via Falling Sky and I'll chuck in something sweet.
- Thanks to the Lass for pointing me towards the HotUKDeals RSS feed, as a result of which I've blagged three free songs off iTunes (which I used to lower the cost of buying Dirty Three's lovely Horse Stories) and used this voucher to get £5 off Guitar Hero 3 at Play.com. If you're in the UK, it's well worth adding to your Bloglines/RSS reader and keeping a daily eye on.
- A nicely spooky read on Mysterious Universe from a correspondent who went to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum at night, apparently known as the most haunted place in Cambodia. Nothing hugely dramatic happens - he's alive to tell the tale, after all - but it's terribly atmospheric, plausible and, just for recounting the horrors perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge at the site, quite horrifying. Check out part 1, 2, 3 and 4.
- Weeks after getting it, I'm still listing to Radiohead's In Rainbows an awful lot. Just to make things even more intriguing, I read this post on Puddlegum about just how well OK Computer and In Rainbows merge together, all wrapped up in a rather convincing bunch of theories about binary code. Regardless, it's true that putting the two albums together in a playlist as shown in said post does result in a very satisfying collection of songs that lead from one to the next extremely well. It's all the more remarkable for just how contemporary the songs from OK Computer (released ten years ago) still sound, and how well the new tracks compare to that modern classic.
- If the internet was made for anything (well, apart from the military), it's for gawping, chuckling and cooing over pictures of animals, so for anyone well versed in I Can Has Cheezburger and Cute Overload, get yourself a regular dose of Disapproving Rabbits, a website that really does exactly what it says on the virtual tin.
- Speaking of CO, I'm not normally one for dressing animals up but this is the finest Halloween costume on a dog you could ever hope to see.
- Last Sunday the Lass and I had the pleasure of lunch at Edinburgh's finest ethical eaterie, Iglu, thanks to a half-price offer in the Sunday Herald. As is becoming typical, the food was nigh-on perfect, with special mention for their boar burger, one of the tastiest meat dishes I've ever eaten. The fact it had a perfectly nice life beforehand stomping around forests just makes it that little bit nicer.
- After that, we watched Once, an absolutely smashing film free of conflict or nastiness, just a couple of people getting to know each other and getting on with life. It's one of the few films to really nail how music can be used to convey feelings and the bliss of losing yourself in a song without ever becoming cheesy or sneery. Great stuff, with a gorgeously sparse soundtrack to savour afterwards.
- What else? I'm still horribly addicted to Paper Mario on the Wii Virtual Console, though there's only two chapters to go (and, oh, the excitement mounts!)... Not far off finishing Moon Dust, a superb read that's ostensibly about the effect of the Apollo programme on the astronauts involved but ends up taking in a whole lot more... Twelve days to the Lass's 30th birthday which promises to be thoroughly nice (I would tell you what I've got her, but she might overhear). Want to buy her something? Course you do! And Saturday mornings have got a whole lot better thanks to Adam & Joe on 6 Music, though it makes tramping over to the Farmers Market just that bit harder. The Song Wars are particularly good - listen out for the tracks they did about public transport, bemoaning those fucking mobile phones with those tiny fucking speakers that little fucking fuckers like to play fucking awful music at a fucking distorted volume that those tiny fucking speakers can't fucking handle, especially fucking Mariah-Careyesque 'music' played at fucking double speed so it sounds like a fucking chipmunk - WHY?! WHY DO THEY DO THAT?! Selfish little fuckers! Send 'em down the mines! Fucks sake, in my day...
- Sorry, that's been building up a while.
