A wee deviation from the norm here for the MP3OTW. For once, it's a live track found out in the wilds of the internerd, rather than taken from an official artist/label site. I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing (© Pet Shop Boys) but as things stand it's completely unbloodyavailable in any buyable form, so there's no chance of any money being lost over this (should that change in the future, this'll immediately come down in a blinding flash of righteousness). So, what's so special?
Well, if you managed to wade through the multitude of paragraphs that made up my review of José González at the Liquid Rooms last Saturday - or the less demented/more intelligible review from the Burd - you'll have noted particular mention given to his cover of Massive Attack's marvellous Teardrop. Since then I've been getting loads of search referrals coming up on the mighty Falling Sky Mainframe for "jose gonzalez teardrop" - so I thought I'd go looking to see if there was a recording of said cover out there. It took some hunting, with many of the links out there now dead, and the first recording found seems to be a radio session complete with the voice of a DJ at the start and some noodly noises at the end. Not bad as such, but... surely there's better out there? There is.
Teardrop (MP3, 3.3MB)
Damned if I know when or where this was recorded or by whom, but it's a live bootleg of Teardrop and, despite a bit of crowd chatter and something going BONK in the first 30 seconds, it's really quite lovely. Fingers crossed for an official, mastered recording of this a la Love Will Tear Us Apart in the near future, but for now this'll do nicely. If you've never really listened to José González before, or couldn't get tickets for all those sold out shows, or you were at one of the concerts and wanted to hear him perform it again - preferably without some wanker nearby talking ABSOLUTE SHIT throughout the song - then this one's for you.
